Mogilev is the pleasant surprise of eastern Belarus. Its rebuilt baroque town hall once again crowns the high bank of the Dnieper — complete with a trumpeter who sounds the hours from the tower — while Star Square below hosts the country's most charming piece of public art: a bronze Stargazer ringed by twelve zodiac chairs that double as a giant sundial. Nobody hurries here, and that's the point.

Getting there
Trains and buses from Minsk take about three hours; Mogilev also links north to Vitebsk for an eastern loop.
Eat & sleep
Base yourself on or near Leninskaya Street and do everything on foot. Try the local zefir — Mogilev's confectionery is quietly famous.
